Public PCs

The SWOSU Libraries have PCs for accessing the Internet and the Libraries' catalog and databases. The PCs also have Microsoft Office for writing papers and creating presentations. All of the PCs on the first floor of the Al Harris Library have CD-RW/DVD drives for burning CDs and viewing DVDs.

Headphones for use with the PCs can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

We strongly recommend that you save your work on a USB flash drive. Flash drives are inexpensive and much more durable than floppies. Files saved anywhere on a PC's hard drive except the My Documents folder are automatically deleted when the PC reboots.

Protect your privacy: we strongly recommend that you reboot the PC before and after using it. Rebooting deletes your browsing history and removes all programs installed by previous PC users.

On the second floor there are three PCs. These PCs are primarily for checking the library catalog and brief web browsing. They don't print and they don't have MS Office.

If you have questions about any of the Libraries' PCs please ask for help at the Reference Desk.

Wireless Network

The Al Harris Library has an open wireless network. The name of the network is "swosuair." If your laptop supports 802.11b/g wireless networking you can access the Internet from most areas of the building. Reception is strongest on the first and second floors. Limited reception is possible in the basement.

Most laptops will automatically detect the wireless network. If you need help with wireless networking, ask for help at the Reference Desk or in the Library Systems Office (room B2) in the basement. For more information about the SWOSU wireless network, including tips on configuring your laptop, see the Wireless Internet section on the ITS Dept.'s Current Student Support page.

Wireless Printing

To configure your laptop to print to the library's public printer, follow these instructions.

Laptop and Checkout

The Al Harris Library has laptops with Windows XP and Microsoft Office. You can check out a laptop for two hours from the Circulation Desk. The laptops can access the wireless network and the 1st floor public printer from most locations on the first and second floors. For information on checking out a laptop click here.

We strongly recommend that you save your work on a USB flash drive. Files saved anywhere on a laptop's hard drive except the My Documents folder are automatically deleted when the laptop reboots.
