Special Section of English Composition for International Students Offered at SWOSU
October 26, 2005
A special section of English Composition 1113 will be offered for English as a Second Language (ESL) students at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford this upcoming 2006 spring semester.
The section is ENGL 1113-1810 which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:35 p.m. in Campbell Building 205. According to Language Arts Department Chair Jill Jones, the course will count for general education credit, just as any English Composition course.
Jones said the course is offered as a service to international students for them to choose only if they want to. They are not required to take the section or perhaps would not even be able to take that particular section because of class conflicts. The students will write the same number of essays as the other 1113 classes and strive to meet the same outcomes/objectives. The students will use the same handbook (which has a section for ESL) plus probably a specialized text/reader.
Jones said international students often have issues with articles, prepositions, verb forms, and vocabulary that other students do not have (or at least different problems than native speakers). Such a class will enable the students to improve their English more quickly because they will have more attention directed to issues affecting them.
Teaching the course will be Thanges Maia Kesnan, who has a specialized degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the University of Bristol in Great Britain.
Jones said this section will not be appropriate for native English speaking students. She said there are eight other sections of regular 1113 English classes. ESL students may enroll online for this course as well as others.
