SWOSU Jazz Ensemble Selected for North TX Jazz Festival

Southwestern Oklahoma State University Jazz Ensemble “A”, directed by Dr. Terry Segress, has been invited to perform this Saturday, April 1, at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival.
The SWOSU performance will be at the Hotel Inter-Continental in Addison, Texas, at 10:30 a.m. in the Crystal I/II/III Ballroom.
The SWOSU group was selected to perform from a CD which was sent to the UNT Jazz Festival Committee last December. The jazz groups, which will be performing at the festival, were selected from CDs submitted by groups from over 20 states.
Big bands that were selected to perform at the festival, in addition to SWOSU, are University of Kansas, Texas Southern University, Texas State University, University of North Florida, Brookhaven College, Shenandoah University, Texas Christian University, University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma.
SWOSU’s Jazz Ensemble will also perform concerts on Friday, March 31, at Central High School and Nocona (TX) High School. The directors of those schools are SWOSU music graduates Melinda Tarkington and Richard Knabe, respectively.
While in Dallas, the SWOSU group will attend concerts by the famed UNT 1:00 Lab Band on Friday night, the Roy Hargrove Quartet and the Yellowjackets on Saturday night. They will return to the Weatherford campus on Sunday, April 2.
The SWOSU group will perform “Beulah Witch”, Don Menza, featuring Carl Spaeth, alto saxophone; “Second Race”, Thad Jones, and “Mad Cap”, Chuck Owen, featuring Garrett Rodriguez, guitar, Nathan Rapson, trombone, and Eric Pennello, tenor saxophone.
Jazz Ensemble “A” members are: saxophones—Carl Spaeth, Harrah; Adriel Reynolds and Eric Pennello, both of Lawton; Teri Gorshing, Weatherford; and Tim Martin, Woodward. Trumpets—Keith Medders, Grove; Elisa Endres, Gainesville, TX; Nicholas Lindley, Cordell; and Steven Conner, Alva. Trombones—Nathan Rapson, Del City; Sean Wright, Oklahoma City; Joshua Lawson, Colorado Springs, CO; and T. J. Cortes, Moore. Rhythm section—Garrett Rodriguez, Stinnett, TX, guitar; Chris Roland, Altus, bass; and Kyle Burrows, Cordell, drums.
The next Weatherford performance for Jazz Ensemble “A” will be on Sunday, April 23, at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the SWOSU campus. The group will perform with Jazz Ensemble “B”, directed by Nathan Rapson. The public is invited and admission is free.
