Census & American Memory Workshops Planned at SWOSU
March 31, 2006
Two free workshops by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries are planned Tuesday, April 4, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
Steve Beleu from the ODL will conduct a morning workshop in the Al Harris Library from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Instruction Room, located on the second floor. The workshop will teach participants how to access data from the Census Bureau's American Factfinder and American Community Survey web pages. Participants will also learn about the Census Bureau's homepage and School District Demographics web page. The focus will be on data and maps which feature Oklahoma.
The afternoon workshop from 1-4 p.m. will cover the American Memory website, provided by the Library of Congress. The afternoon session will explain three of the most popular sites: Native Americans, Literature and Music. The website can be accessed at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html.
“The photographs in American Memory are truly amazing and unforgettable,” said Dale Evans of the SWOSU library. “There are also thousands of copies of sheet music available free from this website—if you know where to look.”
Evans said the two workshops should be very interesting. Pre-registration is not necessary but participants are encouraged to show up early to ensure a place. Additional information is available by calling Evans at (580) 774-7069.
