Labor Day Festival Planned at Colony

The 24th Gallery of the Plains Indian Art Show, the 65th annual Cheyenne Arapaho Celebration and Powwow and a Chautauqua performance will be featured activities at the Colony Labor Day Festival coming up Saturday, September 2 through Monday,
September 4. 

Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford is sponsoring the festival at Colony as a public service. Colony is located 14 miles south of Weatherford.

John Parrish, director of the event, said there will be artists exhibiting their work, crafters selling items and food available at booths in downtown Colony and at the Powwow. 

The Gallery of the Plains Indian Art Show will feature 30 artists including American Indian artists and others.  Paintings, bronze and ceramic sculpture, contemporary and traditional jewelry, Native flutes, pottery, contemporary clothing and beadwork will be on exhibit and for sale.  The show is being mounted by Joe London, chair of the SWOSU Art Department.

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal Celebration takes place Saturday through Monday.  Gourd dancing begins in the afternoon followed by the grand entry at 7 pm.  The evening program features a variety of American Indian dance.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

An old time Chautauqua performance of music and theater will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday and again at 11 a.m. on Monday.  The performances include a portrayal of John H. Seger (1846-1928), founder of Colony with music from the SWOSU Music Department and area schools.

The Colony Gazebo will be available for political candidates to address the gathering.  Standing Bear Cafe and Sandra D’s Dress Shop will be open for business.  A First Aid Station is being provided by the SWOSU School of Nursing, coordinated by Associate Dean Barbara Patterson.   

Corporate sponsor for the event is The First National Bank in Weatherford. The event is being presented in association with the City of Colony and Mayor Loy Luekenga and the Colony GooberFest Committee, chaired by Doug Misak.
