Harris, McKillip Receive NASA Scholarships at SWOSU

Southwestern Oklahoma State University seniors Sebastian Harris of Burns Flat and Joy McKillip of Weatherford are the latest students to receive NASA Space Grant Scholarships.

The scholarship awards are based on research each will be presenting at the SWOSU Research and Scholarly Activity Fair that is coming up April 11 on the Weatherford campus.

Harris, who is majoring in chemistry, has research entitled “Cloning and Expression of Alkaline Phosphatase Gene from Dictyostelium.”  His SWOSU faculty mentor is Dr. Muatasem Ubeidat of the Department of Biological Sciences. 

McKillip, a biology major, has research on the “Bibliography of Mayflies in Oklahoma.”  Her SWOSU faculty mentor is Dr. Peter Grant of the Department of Biological Sciences.

SWOSU is a member of the NASA Oklahoma Space Grant Consortium which provides scholarship funds for students in science and technology areas at member institutions.  SWOSU matches these funds with an equivalent amount of its own.  Scholarship recipients also perform volunteer service at the Stafford Air and Space Museum.
