Haggard Wins OAHPERD Top Award

Ryan Haggard (right), instructor in the SWOSU Department of Parks & Recreation Management, recently won the Recreational Professional of the Year Award for 2007 from the Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Congratulating him is Dr. Chad Kinder, OAHPERD president and associate dean for the SWOSU School of Behavioral Sciences and Education.

Ryan Haggard, instructor in the SWOSU Department of Parks & Recreation Management, recently won the Recreational Professional of the Year Award for 2007 from the Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

OAHPERD annually presents the award to professionals in the recreation field that epitomize the values and desired outcomes of recreation and show interest in and sensitivity to the needs of students, clients and fellow professionals. 

Chad Kinder, president of OAHPERD, said award winners demonstrate creativity and innovation while safely and effectively conducting recreation programs.

 Haggard, who lives in Butler, has been employed by SWOSU since 1996. He initially served as the outdoor adventure specialist with the Foss Lake Adventure Program. Later, Haggard served as the adventure program manager for all five of the SWOSU Adventure Programs (Foss Lake, Cedar Canyon, Lawton, Enid and Lake Tenkiller).

He currently serves as a ranger at Crowder Lake University Park in addition to his teaching duties. He teaches a variety of outdoor adventure based courses including Outdoor Recreation, Ropes Course Facilitation, Advanced Ropes, Sailing and Canoeing, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Rock Climbing, Backpacking and SCUBA.
