SWOSU's Lee to Present at UNICEF Workshop in China
Dr. ChihChen Sophia Lee, MT-BC, director of the music therapy program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, has been invited to feature music therapy training for mental health professionals at a workshop in Shijiazhuang, Herbe Province, China.
The four-day workshop March 15-18 is the third music therapy training series sponsored by the United Nation International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Lee was also invited in 2007.
The focus of Lee’s presentation will address the professional practices of mental health professionals working with street children via therapeutic musical experiences. Participants are selected from the children's shelters across China.
"It is an honor to be scholarly recognized and invited to support the vision of UNICEF, which strives to serve underprivileged children and the hope of our future despite the differences in race, gender, and political standings," Lee said.
Lee has been an active scholar at the regional, national and international levels. She has presented numerous posters and papers at the Southwestern Region of American Music Therapy Association Conferences (2003- 2007), American Music Therapy Association National Conferences (2002-2007) and World Congress for Music Therapy in Brisbane, Australia (2005). She is selected to present at the 2008 Southwestern Region of American Music Therapy Association Conference on March 27-29 and co-present with fellow music therapists at World Congress for Music Therapy in Buenos Aires, Argentina on July 22 - 26.
Lee currently serves on the Academic Program Approval Committee of the American Music Therapy Association and is parliamentarian of the Southwestern Region of American Music Therapy Association (SWAMTA).
She has directed the music therapy program at SWOSU since 2002. SWOSU has the only music therapy program in the state of Oklahoma, and graduates since 2002 have a 100% passing rate on the National Board Certification Exam for Music Therapists.
