SWOSU Programs for Outstanding Students Receive Funding
Dr. Brian Campbell, a chemistry and physics professor at SWOSU in Weatherford, has received funding for two programs on the Weatherford campus that benefit outstanding high school and college students.
Campbell received a $38,400 grant for a third consecutive year for a summer science and mathematics academy on the SWOSU campus. The grant came from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and will support the June 1-July 12 academy.
He also received a $12,141 grant for a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology program. The award came from the National Science Foundation through Oklahoma State University.
Campbell's Summer Science and Mathematics Academy (SSMA) is designed to give up to 32 high school juniors and seniors a two-week campus experience studying the relationship between science, mathematics, technology and society. It is also intended to motivate the participants to pursue higher education and careers in science, mathematics and technology.
The two-week SSMA will be located on the SWOSU campus with participants living in university residence halls, eating in the cafeteria, and taking classes in lecture halls and laboratories. The participants will have access to SWOSU facilities and equipment at no charge.
They will engage in short courses of biology, chemistry, computer science, geology, space science, health, mathematics and physics. Students will have laboratory activities, field experiences, and participate in a problem solving competition.
The ultimate goal of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP-STEM) is to encourage minority students to pursue advanced degrees leading to research or teaching positions. Students must participate in a scholar seminar to earn stipend support. Advanced students are then placed with a mentor to help carry out their research. This is an ongoing program.
