Chelsea Handler Event Cancelled
February 6, 2009
Comedian Chelsea Handler's appearance on March 7 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University has been cancelled.
Brian Adler, chair of the Panorama Committee at SWOSU, said Handler's booking agents said they accidentally double-booked her for the March 7 date, and they chose to cancel the SWOSU appearance. Instead, Handler will appear in Philadelphia as part of a national tour.
"This is extremely disappointing to the Panorama Committee and our students," Adler said. "The Panorama Committee does a great job in bringing outstanding programs to the SWOSU campus, and we are so disappointed in Handler and her agents."
Adler said Handler was booked in May 2008 and a deposit was made. He said the way contracts are written for celebrities, they can cancel due to various circumstances as an overriding obligation or professional responsibility, for example. The right thing would be to reschedule, but Chandler has elected not to reschedule after eight replacement dates were given to her.
"The bad thing on this is that we had already sold over 750 tickets and the event was still a month away," Adler said. "Our students were so excited for the event, and we even had people coming from as far away as Kansas City."
Now, the process of refunding money will start. The SWOSU Business Office will start refunds on Tuesday, February 10.
