SWOSU's Holgado Receives Grant to Help Future Biomedical Researchers
Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Dr. Andrea Holgado, assistant professor in the Biological Sciences Department, were recently awarded an Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education grant for curriculum development in the amount of $13,752.
Dr. Holgado's project titled "Application for Release Time for the Development of the Cellular Biology Laboratory" is intended to improve the preparation of future biomedical researchers through additional curriculum development.
The grant will provide an opportunity for Dr. Holgado to prepare a new laboratory course to be offered to SWOSU students in future semesters. In the course, students will study cellular pathways using the genetic model organism C. elegans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Zygnematalean Algae. Students who take the course will also become skilled at experimental design and research execution, develop an understanding of cellular and molecular biology, and study genetics using hands-on inquiry based activities. Some techniques that will be covered in the class include SDS-PAGE, western blots, immunoprecipitation, microscopy, and enzyme kinetics.
Students interested in the course should contact Dr. Holgado at 580.774.3230 or email@example.com.
