Upward Bound Students Attend Leadership Conference
Seven Upward Bound students at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford were recently selected to attend the 32th annual state-wide Upward Bound Leadership Conference in Midwest City.
Approximately 200 students from across the state attended this years' conference. The theme for the conference was "Frame Your Future".
Students who attended from the SWOSU Upward Bound Program were: Ryan Harvell, Binger; Verlon McKee, Anadarko; Brandon Hunt, Lupe Peralta and Tiffany Morgan, all of Carnegie; Ben Tripp, Watonga; and Rebecca Partl, Ft. Cobb.
Before the conference began, students toured the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Students attended a banquet that featured keynote speaker Dr. John Tran, D.O., who has a family practice in Altus. Jamie Novey, director of the SWOSU Upward Bound program, said Tran was very effective in relating his story of struggling to overcome obstacles in his life to those faced by many Upward Bound students. After the banquet, students participated in group activities which encourage teamwork and communication. A dance concluded the evening.
On the final day of the conference, students heard from guest speaker Scott Charlson, director of technology for learning support at the K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal in Norman. The conference concluded with workshops entitled "Developing Leadership Skills", "Use Your Past Experience to Create a Positive Future", "iLead", and "Team Thunder".
