Slemp Represents SWOSU at Nigh Academy
Southwestern Oklahoma State University student Ashley Slemp of Gracemont recently attended the Nigh Leadership Academy that took place in Oklahoma City.
Slemp was the SWOSU representative to the academy.
Throughout the five-day event, students were introduced to many of Oklahoma's government officials. Some of the officials that Slemp and the other students interacted with included Governor Brad Henry, Lt. Governor Jari Askins, Attorney General Drew Edmondson, Supreme Court Vice Justice Steve Taylor, former Governor George Nigh and wife Donna, and several legislators. The academy also spent a formal evening at the Governor's Mansion.
Slemp, who will graduate from SWOSU in May with a double major in political science and mass communications, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for completing the program.
The academy was established by the state legislature in 2000 to honor George and Donna Nigh for their contributions to public service. Universities in Oklahoma are allowed to send one representative from each campus to the academy.
