National America Recycles Day Planned November 17 at SWOSU
November 5, 2009
A "Recycling Fair and Sale" is being held at Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Tuesday, November 17, as part of National America Recycles Day.
The event is being held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Memorial Student Center on the Weatherford campus. SWOSU freshman Murv Thornton said the focus of the event is on home-made items, environmentally helpful organizations, things and actions. A recycled content book bag contest is also being held with the winner receiving a $250 University Bookstore gift card
All SWOSU and area clubs, organizations and businesses are invited to have a table for the day and give or sell any merchandise, whether it is crafts, t-shirts, home made goods, knitting or canning, for example. Sponsoring the event is the Collegiate Activities Board.
"With the number of vendors we have coming, we expect a good size crowd from around western Oklahoma," Thornton said. "So, it will be good for them and for our SWOSU clubs' pocketbooks."
Some of the local and national groups hosting booths at the event include Nabors Shoes, City of Weatherford, Collegiate Activities Board, Tau Kappa Epsilon, several local crafters and artists and Waste Management of Oklahoma City, a major player in national level waste recovery and diversion.
Any artists or groups that would like to show or sell things at a booth need to email SWOSU Dean of Students Cindy Dougherty at email@example.com by November 16 Tables and chairs will be provided.
The contest for the $250 University Bookstore card will go to the person with the best home-made-with-recycled-material book bag that holds at least 10 pounds of books. Deadline for entries is November 11. Judges for the day will be Weatherford Mayor Mike Brown, Weatherford Director of Parks and Recreation Director Trent Perkins and Weatherford Economic Development Director Chuck Dougherty.
The book bag contest is sponsored by the office of the Dean of Students to remind that everyone has things that can be reduced, reused and recycled. For rules of the contest, go to the "forms" section of the SWOSU Dean of Students web site at swosu.edu.
As part of National America Recycles Day, CAB has also started composting on the SWOSU campus with the help of Rick Skinner, director of the SWOSU Physical Plant. The culmination of this work will be celebrated as part of CAB Earth Day Events in April.
