SWOSU Music Alumni Reunion Planned in Conjunction with SWOSU Jazz Festival
In conjunction with the 40th Annual SWOSU Jazz Festival on February 11-12, the SWOSU Department of Music is hosting a music alumni reunion weekend in Weatherford.
The reunion weekend is held once every five years in conjunction with five-year anniversaries of the SWOSU Jazz Festival. The SWOSU Jazz Festival was started in 1971 by Dr. Terry Segress and has evolved into a major cultural and educational event for western Oklahoma.
In 2007, SWOSU Jazz Director Dr. Keith Talley became head of the festival.
The reunion weekend will include an alumni jazz band, directed by Segress and Dr. Robert Chambers. The jazz band will rehearse Thursday evening and perform at 7 p.m. Friday as a prelude to the 8 p.m. Jazz Festival concert in the Fine Arts Center Auditorium.
On Saturday, the alumni chorus and concert band will rehearse in the morning and perform a short concert with the Southwestern Singers and SWOSU Wind Ensemble at 2 p.m. in Room 102 of the Fine Arts Center.
The alumni chorus will be conducted by Professor Emeritus Dr. Charles Chapman. Dr. Bonnie Sneed, director of choral activities at SWOSU, will conduct the Southwestern Singers. Dr. James South, director of bands and chair of the SWOSU Music, will conduct both the alumni concert band and the SWOSU Wind Ensemble.
All SWOSU music alumni, friends and former students are welcome to participate. For more information, go the SWOSU Music Department website (special events) at www.swosu.edu or call the music office at 580.774.3708.
