Native American Month Activities Scheduled on SWOSU Campus
November is Native American Heritage Month, and the SWOSU H.O.P.E. Native American Club has planned several activities throughout the month on the Weatherford campus. The public is invited to all the activities.
The first event is this Friday, November 5, when a free shawl making workshop is planned at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the Old Science Building.
Other special workshops and events include:
- November 8, 15, 22, 29 - Native American Film Nights - 5 p.m. - Education Bldg 103
- November 12- Indian Taco Sale - 11 a.m. - Memorial Student Center lobby
- November 12 - Arts and Crafts Workshop - 5 p.m. - Old Science Building 102
- November 19 - Food Tasting and Dance Exhibition - 4 p.m. - SWOSU Memorial Student Center Ballroom
The club's Indian Taco Sale on November 12 is $5 per plate. And, to highlight the month's activities, the club will offer visitors the opportunity to experience quality Native American cuisines on November 19 for $5 per plate. The cuisine will consist of meats, soups and breads. The food line begins at 4 p.m. Following the food tasting portion at 5:30 p.m., the Tom Ware dance troupe will offer a dance exhibition demonstrating the Shield Dance, Eagle Dance, Hoop Dance, and Fancy War Dance that will end with the Apache Crown Dancers from Riverside Indian School.
The month long celebration was implemented by President George Bush as an effort to recognize the first Americans for their significant contributions to the United States.
