SWOSU Theater Season Opens with Neil Simon Comedy

October 1, 2012

Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Hilltop Theatre box office is now open to begin taking reservations for the university’s opening production of the 2012-13 season.

The season opens with Neil Simon’s comedy, Brighton Beach Memoirs, which will be staged October 11-13 on the Weatherford campus. Performances are nightly at 7:30 p.m. in the Hilltop Theatre. Box office hours are Monday through Friday from 4-7 p.m. and can be reached by calling 580.774.6046.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first part of a trilogy of plays that Neil Simon wrote as a semi-autobiographical depiction of his own life. It focuses on his life as a young teen in 1937, living with his family in a crowded, lower middle-class neighborhood in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn (NY). Simon revisits his childhood through his central character and narrator, 14-year old Eugene Jerome. It is his coming-of-age story at a time when Eugene’s Jewish family is trying to stay afloat in the latter end of the Great Depression. Eugene is emotionally and physically growing up – and appears to be ruled by his hormones.

Discretion is advised for the production of Brighton Beach Memoirs due to some subject matter and language.

The SWOSU theatre season continues with the classic Charlotte’s Web on November 15-17; The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on March 28-30; and Directions (student directed & designed one-act plays) on April 24-26.

Admission for each production is $5 for adults, $3 for non-SWOSU students, and free for individuals with a valid SWOSU ID.  For more information or to make reservations, call the SWOSU Hilltop Theatre box office phone number at 580.774.6046.
