SWOSU Music Students Receive Scholarships to attend Prestigious Summer Jazz Camp
Three Southwestern Oklahoma State University students in Weatherford have received scholarships made possible by a donor to attend this summer’s Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop in Louisville, Kentucky.
Enid’s Samantha Canon (saxophone), Clinton’s Myles Madden (trombone) and Pond Creek’s Herbert Herrera (trombone) will attend the week-long camp because of the generosity of Mike and Elizabeth Muncy of Oklahoma City.
This is the second year the Muncys have provided scholarships for SWOSU students to attend the camp. Canon, Madden and Herrera were selected by performing two standard jazz works for a panel of judges and by submitting a personal statement and resume.
The summer camp has one of the best jazz faculties in the United States and helps students work on improvisation and other jazz skills, according to Dr. Richard Tirk of the SWOSU Music Department.
Canon is a student of Dr. Keith Talley, and Herbert Herrera and Myles Madden are students of Dr. Robert Chambers.
