Southwestern Oklahoma State University Biology Assistant Professor Dr. Lisa Castle has been awarded the 2014 Medicinal Plant Conservation Award by the United Plant Savers.

The award is given annually to one person or organization deemed to be conducting the most beneficial, inspirational and original project that supports native medicinal plant conservation.

Castle’s project is an assessment tool used to determine how vulnerable medicinal plants are to over-harvest. She has worked with herbalists, herb growers, other ecologists, and SWOSU biology students for 14 years on the project.

Castle will continue to use the assessment tool with classes at SWOSU and will be presenting ideas for using it in other classes at the Botany 2014 meetings in Boise (ID) at the end of July.
