SWOSU Music Department Plans Opera Scenes
Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Music Department has planned two nights of opera on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 18-19, on the Weatherford campus.
SWOSU music students will present scenes from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Berrong Recital Hall. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
The SWOSU Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Robert Chambers, will play. Soloists have been rehearsing with Dr. Kristin Griffeath, Dr. Robin Griffeath and Dr. Daniel Farris. Todd Parker of the SWOSU Art, Communication & Theatre Department has designed and created sets with the help of art students.
The opera is a masterwork from the Classical Era that tells the story of the wily Figaro, a servant who must outwit his boss, the Count. The Count’s amorous ambitions for Figaro’s fiancée result in a comedic tale of intrigue, disguise and forgiveness. A translation of the original Italian text will be projected to the left of the stage, making the work approachable for audience members who have never seen an opera.
