Jessica Heiser Wins SWOSU Patient Counseling Competition
Jessica Heiser of Altus won the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy patient counseling competition held recently in Weatherford and will now advance to the national competition March 27-30 in San Diego.
Heiser, who is a second-year pharmacy student at SWOSU, will receive an all-expense paid trip.
The competitions are sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association—Academy of Student Pharmacists.
Thirteen SWOSU students competed in the local competition, which has taken place annually since 1998. Students engage in a role-playing scenario with a volunteer patient, who this year was Dr. Sally Drinnon. Each student must call upon knowledge and skills to effectively guide the patient in medication decisions and therapeutic management guidelines.
Finishing second was Tara Delonais of Lawton and tying for third place were Nissy Skariah and Stephy Sunny, both of Yukon.
This year’s judges were Annie Frymeier, Watonga Indian Health Center; and Michael Hunt and Jamie Shaddon, both of the Clinton Indian Health Center.
