Kaili Givens Wins SWOSU Patient Counseling Competition

Kaili GivensKaili Givens of Tonkawa won the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy patient counseling competition held recently in Weatherford and will now advance to the national competition March 4-6 in Baltimore.

Givens, who is a third-year pharmacy student at SWOSU, will receive an all-expense paid trip.

The competitions are sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association—Academy of Student Pharmacists.

SWOSU students competed in the local competition, which has taken place annually since 1998. Students counsel a patient on a new prescription medication. According to SWOSU COP Assistant Professor Dr. Krista Brooks, the competition encourages student pharmacists to become better patient educators as well as encourage professional development.

This year’s judges were Max Burchett-Zuniga, Danica Brown and Jennifer Pham, all from the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic.
