Beard Named 2016 Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus at SWOSU
Wichita Falls (TX) pharmacist Janet Beard has been named the 2016 Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus of the Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy.
Beard was honored during the recent SWOSU Pharmacy Alumni Recognition Ceremony held in conjunction with homecoming festivities on the Weatherford campus.
The Outstanding Pharmacy Alumnus award is presented to a SWOSU pharmacy graduate who has demonstrated exceptional support of the College of Pharmacy and outstanding personal achievements in the pharmacy profession.
Beard graduated from SWOSU in 1982 and started her business, first in Grandfield (OK), then Burkburnett and Wichita Falls. Harvest Drug & Gift in Wichita Falls established a new location and bigger store less than 10 years ago and continues to thrive. It is one of less than 500 Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board pharmacies across the country.
“Being a family-owned pharmacy, we understand the importance of being involved in our community,” Beard said.
And, she is true to her word. She has locally served as board member of the American Heart Association, North Texas Rehabilitation Center, Chamber of Commerce as well as co-chairman of Race for the Cure. She was Wichita Falls’ Small Business Person of the Year in 2002.
In addition to local community service, she is supportive of the SWOSU College of Pharmacy by serving on the Southwestern Pharmacy Foundation Board of Directors and the College of Pharmacy Dean’s Advisory Board. Additionally, she is a preceptor for SWOSU student pharmacists, receiving Introductory Practice Preceptor of the Year award in 2013. Beard is a lifetime member of the Southwestern Pharmacy Alumni Association. She is also a member of the Texas Pharmacy Association and International Academy of Compounding pharmacists. In 2015, she received the Professional Compounding Centers of America’s prestigious Evelyn Timmons Advocacy Award for her dedication to the pharmacy compounding industry.
SWOSU College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. David Ralph said Beard personifies the pharmacy school’s tradition of excellence not only through her involvement in professional organizations and recognized awards, but, more importantly, through her dedication to patient care. Not only does she strive to stay ahead of the curve and be politically active, including many industry Capitol Hill visits, she is able to provide exceptional patient care to her community.
Although she is committed to her pharmacy practice, she is dedicated to her family. She and her husband, Rick (co-owner of Harvest Drug) reside in Devol (OK). They have two sons: Jacob (married to Marie) and Joe (married to Samantha). Jacob, Marie, Joe and Samantha are all SWOSU College of Pharmacy graduates, and they all now work at Harvest Drug, thus allowing Janet more time to enjoy spoiling her precious granddaughter, Aubrey.
