Hazardous Materials Manager to Speak Thursday at SWOSU

Llisa RygielLisa Schatzman Rygiel, a certified safety professional and hazardous materials manager, will be guest speaker at the AAUW Spring Luncheon this Thursday, March 30, on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.

The luncheon is at 12 noon in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom. Tickets are $15 ($11 for students) and available from any American Association of University Women member or Dr. Karen Sweeney who can be contacted at karen.sweeney@swosu.edu. The luncheon includes a baked potato bar, salads, desert and drinks.

Rygiel’s topic for the event is “A Tale of Two Superfund Sites – What I Learned as a Safety Professional.”

She has over 20 years of experience in the safety, health and environmental industry.  As professional consultant, she has worked for clients such as DuPont, British Petroleum, General Electric and Dow Chemical Company.  Key projects have included responding to the Deep Water Horizon Spill and PCB remediation in the Hudson River.

Rygiel believes that safety is a core value that must be fully integrated into the business model and that a company cannot truly be successful unless it makes the health and safety of its employees and protection of the environment as its top priorities.  This can be achieved by focusing on team building, management and supervisory commitment, open communication, mentoring and well defined expectations.

She is employed by AECOM, an American multinational engineering firm with approximately 95,000 employees that provides design, consulting, construction and management services to a wide range of clients.
