Thomas McNamara Named Chair of the SWOSU Mathematics Department
Dr. Thomas McNamara has been named chair of the Mathematics Department at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
McNamara joined the mathematics faculty at SWOSU in 2008. A native of New Jersey, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from William Paterson University. He continued his studies at St. Louis University, completing both master’s and doctoral programs in math.
During his time at SWOSU, McNamara has been working diligently with students. He has supervised their participation in the prestigious William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition since 2008 and been the faculty sponsor of the SWOSU Math Club since 2009. He has worked with students on undergraduate research and independent study projects on a variety of topics. These lead to presentations at the SWOSU Research and Scholarly Activity Fair and regional mathematics conferences.
McNamara’s area of expertise is harmonic analysis. This branch of mathematics has myriad applications, ranging from the synthesis of sounds to digital image compression. His research has been presented at seminars and conferences throughout Oklahoma and across the nation.
Since 2012, he has been a member of the Faculty Senate, serving as president of that body in 2016. McNamara has also been active with SWOSU’s Honors Program and has been an instructor with the Summer Science and Mathematics Academy since 2012.
