This is a one-month elective advanced practice experience in the Doctor of Pharmacy program designed to give students the opportunity to experience various aspects of pharmacy academia. During the elective, students will develop knowledge and skill in various aspects of teaching. The student will have the opportunity to be exposed to and participate in didactic teaching, including active learning techniques. In addition, the student will participate in various aspects of service to the college plus engage in scholarly activities. During this rotation, students will gain a broad understanding of pharmacy education on a national as well as institutional level. Students will shadow faculty members as well as actively participate in the education of PharmD students.
Some of the objectives of this advanced practice experience include designing instruction using a variety of instructional strategies, formally presenting/discussing a controversial topic in academic pharmacy, engaging in service to the college as demonstrated by participation in committee activities and assessing, evaluating and applying the academic literature to academic pharmacy, to name a few.
This advanced practice experience will be tailored, in part, to the student’s particular areas of interest in academia. As such, there will be opportunities for the student to develop his/her own experience. Activities could include, but are not limited to, creating didactic presentations, weekly discussions regarding various topics relevant to academia, writing course examination questions, incorporating technology into the classroom and evaluating various assessment techniques.
A student must have pre-approval from the preceptor before selecting this rotation. Before a student is assigned to this rotation, an interview will be conducted to determine the student’s interest in academia.
