General Description
This rotation provides the student an opportunity to work with practicing clinical pharmacist consultants within the pharmaceutical industry. This rotation will expose students to consultive services to various healthcare clients including but not limited to Academic and Teaching Institutions, Regional and Community Hospitals, Long Term Care Providers, Managed Care Organizations, and Indian Health Service.
Prerequisites/Confidentiality
- Must have successfully completed at least two (2) rotations.
- Must be able to provide means of transportation to meet the preceptors at pre-designated locations.
- Must be willing to sign a confidentiality agreement.
- Must be a highly self-motivated and self-directed student with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must have access to a computer and should be proficient in basic computer skills (Windows 95+, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Must provide a copy of updated curriculum vitae to each preceptor.
Schedule
- Day one of rotation
- Orientation meeting with preceptor(s) at St. Anthony Offices at 9:30 AM to discuss course objectives and schedules.
- Within the 4 week rotation, the student will have the opportunity to participate in one or more of the following:
- 1 ride along with Profession Healthcare Representative
- 1 ride along with Institutional Healthcare Representative
- 1 ride along with District Account Manager
Appearance
- Professional business attire required when meeting with Internal and External customers - preceptor will advise.
- Men:
- Business suit or sport coat/dress slacks, dress shirt and tie, appropriate footwear.

- Business pantsuit or dress with appropriate footwear

Course Objectives
- Upon completion of this elective clerkship, the student shall be able to successfully:
- Understand the role of the Clinical Education Consultant (CEC) in the pharmaceutical industry as it relates to both Internal and External customers
- Differentiate the various types of health care systems and be able to evaluate their needs
- Be able to define the terminology and basic components of health economics, outcomes research and pharmacoeconomics
- Understand the process of Disease Treatment Evaluations (DTE)
- Participate and assist in current or on-going CEC projects
- Be able to list and describe some of the programs available to health care providers that are sponsored by Pfizer
Educational Experiences and Responsibilities
- Educational experiences and activities may include;
- Presentation as agreed upon between the student and preceptors (required)
- General overview of business strategies and marketing goals
- Assisting CEC in project management (DTE, POR, Staff Development, Clinical Pathway/Therapeutic Guidelines Development, Pharmacoeconomic analytical software)
- Retrieving medical literature from the internet and evaluating medical literature
- General business software applications (Microsoft Office '97 Professional)
Student Responsibilities and Assessment
- The student will be evaluated at mid-point (2 weeks) and at the end of the rotation based upon:
- Attendance and timeliness
- Enthusiasm and motivation
- Completion of report or projects
- Presentations made (whether to CEC preceptors, external clients or internal Pfizer employees)
- Demonstrated ability to discuss objectives as outlined

Expectations
Daily preceptor contact, if not meeting in person, set time for telephone conference. If CEC is unavailable, voice mail or e-mail report of activity for the day.
Projects
If coincide with CEC customer project may assist (with customer approval). If there is not an ongoing CEC project, student and preceptor to determine a project.

Ride-alongs (Optional)
Student will be given a set of questions to obtain answers from each ride-along experience. If IHR or PHR should have evening Dinner Program, student will be given the option of attending. If student is not comfortable with ride-alongs, interview representative about assigned subject.
