College of Pharmacy

Pharmacy Providers of Oklahoma (PPOK)

OKC

On this selective rotation, the student will get a unique view of pharmacy and the opportunities available to them. The student will be given many opportunities to learn about the various aspects of pharmacy management. Many of those opportunities will be through observation of the pharmacists and other employees of Pharmacy Providers of Oklahoma in meetings and telephone conversations. The amount of knowledge gained during the rotation is truly up to the student.

While at PPOK, the intern will see a different side of third party. He or she will be exposed to the terminology of third party management, and theories behind various pharmacy benefit programs. The student will be given a view from the client’s, manager’s, provider’s (pharmacist’s), and patient’s perspective. The student will observe how the pharmacists handle drug-related questions over the phone, whether it is a drug not covered by insurance or for drug utilization review services.

The pharmacy intern will also be involved in buying group management. He or she will understand the details and the theories behind a buying group. The intern will also help with mailings from PPOK. The student may also be called upon to help prepare lists, retrieve, or analyze data.

The meetings of the Oklahoma Pharmaceutical Association or Pharmacy Providers of Oklahoma are very informative. Attending these meetings allows the student to get an accurate gauge of the current market from the pharmacist’s perspective. These meetings also give the student a vision of the future of pharmacy according to pharmacists.

With this rotation, each student’s experience will be different according to the projects that will be active at PPOK during the student’s time. The student will learn more from watching and listening than the actual activities in which they will be involved.
