At this site, the student has an opportunity to view many different aspects of Pharmacy. Select Specialty is a 30 bed hospital-within-a-hospital that is best defined as a step down unit (LTAC) specializing in medically complex patients hospitalized for ventilation, dialysis, wound care, brain injuries, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation. Two full time pharmacists work closely with other health care professionals including physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and a dietician, to provide each patient with the highest quality of care.
Location: St. Francis Hospital (5 South)
Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Students usually work form 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m.
While at this site, the student will be exposed to many different fields. Below is a list of opportunities the student may encounter:
- Chart review/Patient Case studies
- Antibiotic profiling (i.e. determining therapy and IV/PO switch)
- Anti-coagulant profiling
- Pain management
- TPN Preparations
- IV & Epidural Preparations
- Cart fill / check
- Management Paper work
- Chemotherapy Preparation
- Nutritional rounds with a dietician
- Observe different therapy sections (PT,OT, speech pathology)
- Ordering / inventory
- Narcotic inventory / restocking
- Pharmaceutical in-services with staff
- Adverse Drug Reaction Review
- Pharmacokinetic dosing of dialysis patients
- Opportunity to create new policies and procedures
- Counsel patients and / or patient caregivers on drug regimens, and possible side effects, and food / drug interactions prior to discharge.
Not every student will be exposed to every area, but student's special interests will be accommodated. This will maximize the student's positive experience at Select Specialty.
