An experience as an intern in the VA hospital in Oklahoma City will introduce the student to the many opportunities available to pharmacists functioning in a government regulated facility. Initially, the student will be given the privilege to function as a technician in a mail order type atmosphere. This will develop the student's appreciation for the role that technicians play in pharmacy today. After this introduction, the student will shadow pharmacists functioning: (1) in the outpatient pharmacy, (2) as infectious disease specialists, (3) as psychiatric medicine specialists, and (4) as controlled substance specialists. While shadowing these pharmacists the student will not only gain hands on experience and knowledge, but also gain an appreciation for the freedom pharmacists are granted in a large government regulated facility.
