The Lawton VA Outpatient Clinic is an ambulatory clinic that was opened in 1995, located next to Reynolds Army Community Hospital on Ft. Sill Army Base. The VA currently employs approximately 50 full time employees at the LOPC and numerous volunteers. The clinic is staffed by five physicians, one physician assistant, one psychiatrist, one psychologist, eight nurses, two social workers, a dietician, two staff pharmacists and other support personnel.
Pharmacy students who select this rotation will gain experience in warfarin dosage adjustments and labs. Students will also gain clinical experience interacting with physicians by assisting with drug information questions.
The student will be required to
- Check in patients and perform blood pressure check
- Obtain past medical history, medication list, drug allergies
- Review patient chart from computerized records
- Analyze patient lab and determine proper dosage adjustment
- Proper counseling of patients of dosage regimen, food and drug interactions, signs and symptoms of bleeding, and plan of care
- Assisting primary care physicians with drug information questions
