W. W. Hastings Indian Hospital offers a unique ambulatory experience for students. Hastings is an IHS facility which combines an outpatient clinic with a 59 bed inpatient facility. The outpatient clinics offer a wide array of services and provide over 200,000 visits annually. The pharmacy department is staffed by 14 pharmacist and is divided into 3 components including the outpatient pharmacy, the inpatient pharmacy, and the satellite fast-track pharmacy. All pharmacy components adhere to the 6 standards of pharmacy practice for IHS:
- Assure appropriateness of drug therapy
- Verify that patients understand their medication and appropriate outcomes of their therapy
- Assure availability, preparation and control of medications
- Provide drug information, drug therapy consultation, and staff education
- Provide health promotion and disease prevention activities
- Manage therapy for selected patients
These standards help to develop clinical skills and assure optimization of pharmaceutical care. Students also experience unique pharmacy programs including a pharmacy-based anticoagulation clinic, limited primary-care provider functions, aminoglycoside consultation services, and TPN management.
