W. W. Hastings Indian Hospital offers a unique ambulatory experience for students. Hastings is an IHS facility which combines an outpatient clinic with a 59 bed inpatient facility. The outpatient clinics offer a wide array of services and provide over 200,000 visits annually. The pharmacy department is staffed by 14 pharmacist and is divided into 3 components including the outpatient pharmacy, the inpatient pharmacy, and the satellite fast-track pharmacy. All pharmacy components adhere to the 6 standards of pharmacy practice for IHS:

  1. Assure appropriateness of drug therapy
  2. Verify that patients understand their medication and appropriate outcomes of their therapy
  3. Assure availability, preparation and control of medications
  4. Provide drug information, drug therapy consultation, and staff education
  5. Provide health promotion and disease prevention activities
  6. Manage therapy for selected patients

These standards help to develop clinical skills and assure optimization of pharmaceutical care. Students also experience unique pharmacy programs including a pharmacy-based anticoagulation clinic, limited primary-care provider functions, aminoglycoside consultation services, and TPN management.
