ISWMC Emergency Department
The ER rotation focuses on a very practical, hand-on approach to patient care by a clinical pharmacist in the emergency department setting. The preceptors have become an integral part of the ER department which includes medical residents and medical students. Pharmacists perform a variety of tasks including medication histories, therapy recommendations, patient education, physician/resident education, and other pertinent activities. This rotation requires a students to have some background in clinical pharmacy, therefore it highly recommended that students be in their second semester of rotations. Students must be willing to work both day and evening shifts as the patient populations encountered will differ significantly between the two shifts. Students may also attend the resident/student education sessions at the discretion of the preceptors. This rotation takes place in a very fast paced environment, but provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to practice pharmaceutical care while dealing with a variety of patients and other healthcare professionals.
