The Maxor Specialty rotation through Maxor will give the student an opportunity to see a more specialized opportunity for the practice of pharmacy. Maxor Specialty is the specialty medication provider division of the Maxor Corporation. Specialty pharmacy is the segment of pharmacy practice that provides specialized therapies, often self injected medications, to patients for self administration or in some cases administration by their physicians. Patients that are on service through Maxor Specialty generally are monitored for compliance as well as problems such as infusion site reactions or device malfunctions. Some of the patients will have chronic illnesses that will require that they be on specialized therapy for the remainder of their lives.
The rotation through Maxor Specialty will give the student the opportunity to perform hands on activities related to the specialty pharmacy. These will include patient assessment for appropriateness of therapy, appropriate use of these specialty medications and determination of medical necessity, learning abilities of the patient or their care giver(s), various manufacturers administration devices, teaching techniques for self administration of medications, patient follow up and monitoring, compliance monitoring and education techniques related to maintaining a high level of compliance and adherence and general knowledge of what a specialty medication is and disease states related to specialty medication use.
The Maxor Specialty rotation will also allow the student the opportunity to deal one on one with their patient, as well as coordinating the care of the patient. There will be opportunities to assess the patient, visit with the physician, as well as participate in the marketing activity related to specialty pharmacy and interacting with the authorizations staff and billing staff to learn all aspects of this segment of the business.
