Overview

This rotation will give the pharmacy student exposure to various patient care experiences in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Norman Regional Hospital is a 324-bed nonprofit, community healthcare organization offering a variety of medical and surgical services. Pharmacy clinical specialists are actively involved in pharmaceutical care and are well respected by the medical staff.

Daily Schedule

Rotation hours are generally Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. However, students will be required to arrive earlier (7 am) at least one day per week for rounds.

Student Rotation Activities

  • Attend rounds with internal medicine physicians and a nurse practitioner as well as attend ICU rounds and rehabilitation staffing.
  • Review assigned patient charts on a daily basis, evaluating the patient’s pharmacotherapeutic regimen and making recommendations, when indicated.
  • Provide drug information to patients and healthcare providers.
  • Conduct patient medication histories on selected diabetes or cardiac rehabilitation patients.
  • Present a formal case/disease state presentation of a patient followed during the rotation.
  • Counsel selected rehabilitation patients prior to their hospital discharge.
  • Assess nutritional needs and determine parenteral nutrition formulations as well as monitor electrolytes for consulted patients.
  • Complete vancomycin and aminoglycoside pharmacokinetic consultations.
  • Present a journal club article on a recent publication.
  • Participate in topic discussions and patient presentations.
  • Participate in clinical pharmacist activities, including renal medication dosage adjustments and venous thromboembolism prophylaxis.
  • Present a short inservice/program to hospital/pharmacy staff and/or outpatients on a topic approved by the preceptor.
  • Attend an outpatient diabetes patient education class.
  • Attend and participate in other activities as assigned by the preceptor.

Student Evaluations

Students will be evaluated based on the criteria in the Pharmacy Practice Manual. A midpoint evaluation will be given at the end of the second week, and the final evaluation will be given at the end of the rotation.
