This rotation will allow Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates to provide psychiatric pharmacotherapy to inpatient and outpatient clinical services for patients with mental health disorders. Activities and assignments may include, but are not limited to:
- Review assigned patient charts on a daily basis to evaluate current therapy, assessing and making recommendations for treatment plans.
- Attend rounds with physicians, psychiatry residents, and/or medical students
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings
- Provide pharmacotherapy information to physicians and staff
- Provide appropriate patient education when requested
- Participate in the outpatient pharmacotherapy mental health referral clinic
- Present case presentations on patients being followed, including topic discussion over the disease state
- Other activities may be assigned during this rotation as the discretion of the preceptor which may including, but is not limited to, journal article presentations and in-services.
Upon successful completion of this rotation, students will be able to:
- Describe the components of the DSM-IV multi-axial approach used to diagnose psychiatric disorders
- Using appropriate terminology, recognize and describe the symptoms and clinical course associated with the presentation of psychiatric disorders
- Become familiar with common assessment tools used in the care and treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders
- Develop proficiency in the pharmacotherapeutic management of mental health disorders by integrating didactic concepts in pathophysiology, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutics with clinical experience
- Optimize drug therapy in patients by identifying potential drug-related problems and making appropriate recommendations to the patient's health care team
- Monitor drug therapy of mental health medications for efficacy, adverse effects, and clinically significant drug interactions
- Assess patient treatment plans and clinical responses, formulate treatment plans with establishment of treatment goals, and make recommendations to the responsible mental health provider
