St. Anthony Hospital
OKC
This rotation provides the Pharm. D. student the opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. Students enrolled in this rotation will work very closely with the preceptor in an antibiotic management program at Saint Anthony Hospital. Experience in this program should give the student the ability to provide antimicrobial recommendations that are both appropriate and cost-effective. Goals of this rotation will be to understand the pharmacist's role in management of infectious diseases and expose the student to patients presenting with a wide variety of disease states.
During this rotation, the student will:
- Be assigned patients from the antibiotic management program list to perform pharmacotherapy evaluations. These evaluations should focus on the appropriateness of the antimicrobial regimen along with the proper dose, duration, monitoring parameters, and endpoints of therapy for every given disease state. The student should also be able to identify current medications in a patient's profile that may interact with the antimicrobial regimen.
- Actively participate in infectious diseases lectures given throughout rotation. Students will be given several articles to review (current guidelines, review articles, etc.) prior to each discussion. Topics will include: introduction to infectious diseases, antibiotic class review, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, endocarditis, meningitis, skin and soft tissue infections, fungal infections, HIV/AIDS.
- Document all clinical pharmacy services (including recommendations, drug information, and patient counseling).
- Attend and participate in all conferences, case presentations, and other activities of the other pharmacy students at St. Anthony Hospital.
- Present a formal case presentation of a patient followed during rotation.
- Present a formal journal club presentation using a recent article related to infectious diseases.
