In this rotation, areas of participation will include the Internal Medicine Team and Healthfirst Asthma Education Clinic. At a minimum, students are expected to be at the hospital from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Perfect attendance is expected.

During this rotation the student will:

  • Perform pre-rounding pharmacotherapy evaluations (chart review) of assigned patients on the Internal Medicine team.
  • Attend and participate in Internal Medicine Attending Rounds daily (M-F).
  • Participate in the education and treatment of Healthfirst Asthma Education Clinic patients.
  • Obtain and record medication histories on selected Internal Medicine patients.
  • Counsel selected Internal Medicine patients prior to their hospital discharge.
  • Provide drug information to patients and the health-care team.
  • Document all clinical pharmacy services (include medication histories, pharmacotherapy recommendations, drug information responses and patient counseling sessions).
  • Attend and participate in all conferences, case presentations, and other activities of pharmacy students.
  • Review appropriate literature to prepare for pharmacotherapy topic discussions.
  • Attend and contribute to all pharmacotherapy topic discussions.
  • Lead discussion of one or more pharmacotherapy topic discussion ~ 2 hours each.
  • Present formal patient presentations in which there has been a recommendation made (including past medical history, social history, physical exam, etc.).
  • Present a formal journal club presentation over a recent publication.
  • Present one major review of a disease state, current therapy and role of a new drug in the treatment of that disease ~ 30 minutes.
  • Prepare a written clinical update for the Internal Medicine team based on above review ~ one page (may be front and back).
