The primary goal of this rotation is to help the student develop the skills necessary to function within a multidisciplinary team and to provide exposure to inpatient clinical pharmacy. Students will be trained in one of five areas: internal medicine, nephrology, pain management/hospice, surgery or critical care. They will be exposed to a diverse patient population and a wide variety of disease states including: hypertension, diabetes, ESRD, coronary artery disease, COPD, CHF, various infectious processes and traumas.
Student responsibilities will include daily rounds, participation in topic discussions, and patient education, as well as various projects including drug utilization evaluations (DUE’s). During rounds, they are expected to recommend drug therapies, review labs and recommend medication adjustments, recognize drug related problems, drug-interactions, reconcile medication histories, and act as a drug information resource for the team. Students will also attend various committee meetings and medical lectures as assigned by the preceptor.
