
CLERKSHIP IN CARDIOLOGY/ADULT INTERNAL MEDICINE

Practice Site:
This rotation has a heavy emphasis on cardiology in an ambulatory setting. The rotation is based out of a private cardiologist’s office at the Shadowlake office complex in south Oklahoma City. Students will gain exposure to managing specialized disease states such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and thromboembolic disorders.
Patient Population:
Ambulatory adults with at least one cardiac health problem.
Daily Schedule:
Will vary depending on clinic schedule. Will begin at approximately 8:30 AM and end at approximately 4-5 PM.
Rotation activities for the student:
- Conduct patient medication histories and/or counseling in the cardiologist’s office.
- Manage specialized disease states such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and thromboembolic disorders.
- Write patient care notes regarding the patient care interviews for placement in the patient’s medical record.
- Respond to drug information requests from patients and/or the medical team verbally or in writing.
- Collect vital signs when necessary for patients in the clinic.
- Become proficient in the operation of various laboratory point-of-care devices in the clinic (i.e. Cholestek®)
Other rotation activities for the student:
- Participate in pharmacotherapeutic discussions with the faculty preceptor. Discussions will include a disease state the student has commonly encountered while caring for their assigned patients. Students should read about the assigned topic prior to the discussions.
- Present 2 formal cases, as described in the Pharmacy Practice Manual.
- Make one formal journal club presentation over a recent article.
Therapeutic content of rotation:
This rotation will have a heavy focus on cardiology topics and pharmacotherapy. However, other medicine topics will be covered depending on each patient you are following.
