College of Pharmacy

The Veterinary Pharmacy

Oklahoma city

Students on Selective Rotation with The Veterinary Pharmacy, Inc. will first be made familiar with Policies and Procedures of The Veterinary Pharmacy.  This will include our operations, as well as the uniqueness of a veterinary pharmacy as opposed to a traditional pharmacy.

Students will be instructed in the compounding procedures necessary for our pharmacy.  Since our primary preparation is administered in “bullet” form, students will be taught how we prepare and pack them for dispensing.  (see our web site:   http://www.tvpok.com/).  The differences in our dispensing function will be demonstrated, and the student will be integrally involved in all aspects of dispensing including communicating with veterinarians and producers.

While separate from our pharmacy, students will be introduced to the USDA licensed vaccine manufacturing facility operated by SolidTech Animal Health, Inc.  This is the only USDA licensed vaccine producer in the State of Oklahoma, and will provide the student an introduction into development, manufacturing, and QC much like what they would see in a pharmaceutical company, but on a smaller scale.

Another separate function here is NuTopicals, L.L.C., which develops and distributes non-prescription, topical preparations.  While the majority of products are for the veterinary field, the firm markets a product for human application.  The NuTopicals operation will provide the student an opportunity to be involved to some extent in an FDA approved packaging and distribution operation.

Compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies will be shown.  Students are most familiar with State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.  We are, of course, subject to these rules as are all licensed pharmacies.  While all pharmacies are subject to rulings of the Food and Drug Agency (FDA), as a veterinary pharmacy we have additional FDA requirements that will be shown.

Less than the standard 160 intern hours will be reported to the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy for this rotation.
