Michelle Stevens

Michelle Stephens serves as a member of the Oklahoma State School Board. As an attorney she provides pro bono legal counsel to various non-profit foundations. She also serves as a Grant Administrator for the Great Plains Resource Conservation and Development non-profit organization. Before deciding to devote more time to family and community work she served as the Rural Development and Public Policy Director for the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture a non-profit agriculture foundation. 

Prior to joining the Kerr Center to found the Public Policy and Rural Development program, Mrs. Stephens served as an Assistant Attorney General under Oklahoma Attorneys General Susan Loving and Drew Edmondson. As an Assistant Attorney General, Mrs. Stephens acted as legal counsel for various state boards and commissions including the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. 

In 1998 Mrs. Stephens was appointed to serve as a Commissioner of Human Services.  The Oklahoma Commission for Human Services is a ninemember governing board for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. The Commission appoints the Director of Human Services, approves program budgets (over $100 million budget), funding, and policies and procedures that direct the Department's program and service delivery.

Mrs. Stephens is a graduate of the Oklahoma Agriculture Leadership Class IX. She also served as a Task Force Member for Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating’s Animal Waste and Water Quality Protection Task Force where many of the recommendations made to the legislature were incorporated into the present CAFO statutes in Oklahoma.

She is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association and the Custer County Republican Executive Committee. She is a member of the Oklahoma Christian University Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Stephens’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma Christian University and Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

She is married to Dr. Brian Stephens, a Weatherford Dentist and they have two girls, Reagan, 5, and Madison, 4.
