Department of Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mental states and human and animal behavior. Psychologists work in a variety of fields of the science to better understand why we behave as we do collectively and individually. With advancements in the understanding of behavior and mental processes, psychology practitioners help people better cope with their particular problems in order to lead a more productive life.

Psychology Department Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Psychology is:

  • To provide students with educational experiences that facilitates their knowledge of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings in psychology as well as encourage lifelong learning.
  • To equip students with research methodology and critical thinking skills.
  • To prepare students for employment or further study in a variety of fields or disciplines.
  • To create an environment in the department that reflects concern for students and promotes tolerance and diversity.
  • To provide professional development opportunities and outreach programs for our faculty, students and individuals in our service area.
  • To ensure that our graduate students have the advanced knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen profession.

Studies in Psychology

The Department of Psychology at SWOSU provides students with a strong basic background in the scientific study of behavior through common core courses, professional application courses, and selected electives. This undergraduate training will prepare students for graduate education in almost any field of Psychology, as well a number of other disciplines. The Department also has four graduate programs in applied areas of Psychology and Counseling

The Department offers the Bachelor of Science in Psychology and academic minors in Psychology, Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Counseling, Child Development, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The Department offers a Master of Science (M.S) in School Psychology and Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Counseling, School Counseling, and School Psychometry as well as coursework leading to State Certification in School Psychology and the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). SWOSU students benefit from small class sizes, individual attention, and opportunities for hands-on research/learning experiences.
