Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behavior and mental processes. It is also the application of knowledge to help solve problems in the real world.

Psychologists study and perform research involving such basic processes as perception, motivation, learning, memory, cognition, and physiology. They also study and treat the development and adjustment of the individual to the environment and social situation. An integral part of the science involves the study of the research methodology involved in the analysis of behavior. Psychology is a discipline which has its roots in philosophy and is highly related to the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, physiology, and biology.

The Department is located in the Psychology Building. Special facilities and resources include computers for professional database searches, statistical training and data analysis; a wide range of human learning and memory equipment for demonstration and research; solid state physiological recording equipment; and videotaping facilities for training in psychotherapy.

The faculty presently consists of seven members with broad training and diverse specialties and research interests in psychology. These interests include: memory and visual search, social influence and attitude change, prejudice, effects of stereotyping on behavior, child literacy, health psychology, educational psychology, and child and adult psychopathology. Undergraduate students are actively involved in research projects. However, the major emphasis of the faculty is in teaching and helping each student to reach his or her learning goals. Personal advisement throughout the student's undergraduate tenure is a priority of the faculty in the department.

The Department also sponsors Psi Chi which is a national honor society in psychology and a psychology club which enables the student to socialize with other psychology majors and minors and faculty in an informal atmosphere. The club sponsors speakers, career workshops, field trips, community projects, and a faculty-student socials.

Graduates of the programs have been accepted for graduate study at comprehensive universities and/or successfully employed in a wide variety of career settings including hospitals, community mental health centers, guidance, education, and state and federal government agencies.
