April - First Week
1906: The Southwestern Normal was the first of three state schools to open a kindergarten department.
1940: The Southwestern student publication was awarded first place in the annual senior collegiate press contest for Oklahoma.
1958: A contract was awarded to Smith and Son for the bid of $224,216 for construction of two new apartment buildings, each with 16 units. The apartments were to be rented to married couples.
1961: E.E. Mason, former band director at Southwestern, died suddenly. He had retired from Southwestern in 1953.
1973: Spiraling food prices caught up with Southwestern, and it was announced that cafeteria meal tickets would be boosted from $192 to $230 per semester beginning in the fall.
1986: Close to 200 handicapped children from throughout southwest Oklahoma competed in the Special Olympics at Milam Stadium.
