1939: Southwestern was slated to begin a new era during the fall semester. The school was first known as a normal school, then a state teachers college and now as Southwestern State College of Diversified Occupations. Not only teachers but also experts in a long list of other trades and professions were to be trained at the college under the new plan. James S. Boren was the college's new president. He came to Weatherford from Mangum where he had been superintendent of schools and head of the Mangum Junior College.
