January - Second Week
1921: Arthur Middleton of the Metropolitan Opera Company of New York City appeared in concert at the Southwestern Normal Auditorium. Excitement was in the air because seldom did a great artist appear in a small community like Weatherford.
1939: A boiler explosion destroyed the college power plant, and three students were badly burned in the incident.
1951: Dr. Walker W. Isle, president of Southwestern from 1935 to 1939, died following a heart attack in Spokane, Wash.
1958: Football coach Joe Bailey Metcalf resigned to take the position of superintendent of Hollis schools. J.W. Cole became head football coach at Southwestern.
1979: Dr. Robert Brown became dean of the Southwestern Graduate School, replacing Dr. Harold Massey who retired.
