Looking Back

January - Third Week

1941: A new administration building for Southwestern seemed assured when Oklahoma Governor Leon Phillips placed it on his “must” list. Phillips favored the college building and a kitchen for the sanatorium from a list of building requests.

1958: Former basketball stars were expected at the opening of the new health and physical education building. The building was opened to the public to see the Bulldogs take on rival Central State.

1962: Myrtle E. Kelly announced her retirement as head of the Art Department. Richard Taflinger was named to succeed Miss Kelly.

1971: Southwestern was approved to host a Reserve Officer Training Corps unit.

1977: The Chemistry Club was named an outstanding student affiliate of the American Chemical Society. It was the sixth time in 10 years that Southwestern’s Chemistry Club had received the highest recognition the ACS gives to its student affiliates.
