January - Fourth Week
1937: The faculty held an open house at the two new residence halls. Hundreds of people from the Southwest district toured the buildings and were enthusiastic in their praise.
1951: Enrollment at Southwestern for the second semester reached 638, according to Registrar Millie Thomas. Peak enrollment for the first semester was 941. Of this number, approximately 175 withdrew for various reasons before the close of the term. In many cases, men entered the armed services.
1967: Dr. Gladys C. Bellamy, chairperson of the English and Language Arts Department, announced she would be retiring after spending 18 years on the Southwestern campus.
1971: Southwestern was the only school in Oklahoma offering a medical records administration program. It was announced that Daisy Quetone, senior from Cache, would be the program’s first graduate.
1979: Traffic was stopped a half-mile in all directions of Rankin Williams Fieldhouse after basketball equipment manager Eddie Bennett noticed smoke coming from the basement. A boiler had overheated, and firemen turned off the gas valves to avoid an explosion.
