1923: J.W. Turner, superintendent of schools at Newkirk, was elected to the presidency of Southwestern State Teachers College at a meeting of the state board of education. A.H. Burris, the current president, resigned on the same day Turner was hired.
1931: Southwestern felt the force of a downward economy. In addition to a general salary reduction at all state schools, Southwestern was notified that the manual training department would be discontinued after the close of the summer term.
1940: A total of 104 seniors, the largest spring graduating class in the history of Southwestern, was scheduled to receive diplomas at commencement exercises.
1951: Members of the baseball team and their coach, Rankin Williams, were honored at a banquet at Stewart Hall for winning the 1951 Oklahoma Collegiate Conference baseball title and for Williams being named "Coach of the Year."
1963: Work was scheduled to start on an addition to the Memorial Student Center. The addition on the south side of the building was to enlarge the cafeteria dining room and kitchen facilities.
1974: Mabel Owen announced she would be retiring after teaching 38 years-17 of those years at Southwestern. She also established a $10,000 trust fund to provide scholarships for freshmen English majors.
